MOKOSOI GRASSROOTS WOMEN'S ASSOCIATION

Mokosoi Grassroots Women's Association In Collaboration with GROOTS International (Mokosoi)

Mokosoi is a national network of rural and urban women's groups from the National Capital District's four wards, surrounding villages and other provinces. Each member of Mokosoi represents a women's group usually from their home (rural) village. It is based in Port Moresby, the capital of Papua New Guinea, an island north of Australia in the South Pacific. Mokosoi's objectives include working for women's empowerment, grassroots women's leadership, and economic development for women to improve the standard of living for strong families and community. Mokosoi is a non-government organisation and has partnered with Groots International, the provincial and national women's councils and other national NGO networks.

Mokosoi participates in international, regional and national peer exchanges hosted in villages and settlements. In 1996, 97, 98 a three part/four country exchange brought grassroots women together from Kenya, US, Canada and PNG to share strategies and experiences. Village to villages peer exchanges and one national event are held annually. Many Mokosoi members are active in local community governance. Currently Mokosoi is participating in the Huairou Commission's Disaster Watch monitoring the rebuilding activities after the Rabaul volcano eruption and Waitape tidal wave.
