CORK WOMEN'S EDUCATION INITIATIVES (CWEI)

The overall objective of C.W.E.I. is to address the pre-development, educational and employment needs of women who have been marginalised economically and socially, and who are active or want to be active in their local communities.

Our main target groups are women active in the Cork area who experience exclusion from emerging policy and programme initiatives, directed by social reform in education, training and the labour market.

We aim to challenge traditional approaches to adult education and to develop educational programmes which are appropriate to the needs of working class and marginalised women. This we see as aiding the empowerment and development of community based women.

To this end CWEI have over the last ten years put in place various Initiatives to further our aims and objectives. These include:

  • Women in Community Course. This course is a two year diploma course run in conjunction with the Department of Adult and Continuing Education, U.C.C.
  • Women's Forum, 1995. This forum provided a platform for community based women's groups and co-operatives to exchange ideas and information on a broad range of issues effecting marginalised women.
  • New Opportunities for Women (N.O.W.) Project 1996-1999.
  • Community Women's Resource Centre. Ionad na mBan.
  • Community Education and Development Degree Course run in conjunction with Cork Institute of Technology.
