LUNA CRECIENTE Luna Creciente is a network of women from Ecuador who are working to encourage participation in the community through generating consciousness and organization. The network’s member groups have varied focuses depending upon the region, ethnicity and specific conditions of the area in which they are located. Luna Creciente is formed by women’s organizations from six different provinces including the women of Pichincha who participate in productive community activities through the Women’s Association Nuevos Senderos; the 700 women farmers of Cotopaxi who do organizational work with the Union of Farmer Organizations of Cotopaxi; the indigenous women farmers of Canar who maintain a leadership school in the community; the indigenous farmers women of Azuay who participate in the Women’s Network of Biblian; the indigenous women of Loja who are involved in indigenous political organizations and maintain a leadership school; the urban women of El Oro who are working with the Association of Sex Workers; and finally the urban and farmer women of Sucumbios who have united to maintain a battered women’s shelter and organize workshops and discussions. Member organizations of Luna Creciente have been working with no funding on programs that create entry spaces for grassroots women to participate in local governance, workshops, and technical training. Luna Creciente’s member groups hope to gain sustainable autonomy through leadership training in order to promote political participation with a gender based analysis, documentation of the movement’s methods and overall improved communication within the movement, support for member organizations income-generating projects and development of internal functioning within each province.
