GROOTS CANADA

GROOTS Canada is a network of women engaged in community organizing, community economic development, housing issues and leadership development of women directly affected by poverty and oppression.

GROOTS Canada was very active in the process leading up to the 1996 Habitat II Istanbul and in the follow-up. Several members of Groots Canada attended both Habit 2 and Habitat +5, five years later in New York. We continue to work on women and housing issues, community leadership development and economic development.

GROOTS TORONTO prepared "Keeping Canada's Commitment Alive: A Community Guide to Habitat II". This 40-page booklet makes the work of the Habitat conferences accessible to community groups. It documents the major achievements of the Habitat Conference, provides an overview of some of the major issues addressed in the Habitat Agenda, indicates how this relates to the local community, offers examples of innovative projects, and suggests ideas for action at the local community level. This booklet was distributed to hundreds of community groups throughout Canada. Publication of the document was funded by CMHC. For more information about other Toronto projects,

YELLOWKNIFE WOMEN'S SOCIETY
The Yellowknife Women's Society (YWS) was formed in 1990 as an independent grassroots body to represent women's voices in negotiating the predominant issues at that time. Originally focused on women's right to choose, YWS has since expanded into an overseeing body facilitating various programs, including the Centre for Northern Families. The YWS statement of principles explains, "the Yellowknife Women's Society recognizes the diversity of women and the validity of their views and goals. The Society will serve as an umbrella for many types of charitable activities without trying to rationalize them in terms of any single philosophy."
